I just follow what it tells me to do; I find git is OK when it works and incomprehensible when it does not. I completely agree with John. This is a common problem with software documentation. There is no attempt to present the basic concepts or workflow in an introductory user's guide that does not beg questions and chase tails. As with many such systems, Git does have a wiki and user forums that fill in many of the missing pieces of puzzle with step by step instructions and introduction of basic concepts. This stuff belongs on the front page, though.
