What's the difference between the LINKAGE and LINKAGE1 macros? Why is
LINKAGE1 needed?

LINKAGE is for plugins, LINKAGE1 for internal opcodes.

Would it be OK if I rename LINKAGE1 to LINKAGE_INTERNAL or something
like that more explicit?
