[Cs-dev] Csound.github.io: Suggestions for Improvements

Subject[Cs-dev] Csound.github.io: Suggestions for Improvements
Hi All,

I was thinking that the Csound.github.io site has a lot of potential
for helping to show what's possible with Csound now. In that regards,
I thought I'd start this thread as a place to suggest improvements to
the site. For instance:

* The site should highlight Csound beyond it's original self-contained
system design. We should mention it is usable within Desktop
applications, Mobile applications, Web applications, and Embedded
systems. (Perhaps on the About page?)

* Download should be moved from being a link on the right to a
top-level section. A large button for downloading should be added to
the front page that takes you to the download page. On the download
page, we should explain all of the various downloads, as well as
maintain active links to the current releases. (This was sort of
difficult to maintain on the old csound.sf.net page, but I think
should be much easier with the csound.github.io git repository)

* Community page should provide a link to IRC on freenode

* The Listen page is nice in that has the embedded Soundcloud player.
I think the page should have more information describing the
soundcloud group and invite users to join and share their music.

* The Listen page could be remade as a "Showcase" page. We might want
to add other things like links to Android and iOS applications.

* We could add a "Search" field to the Documentation page that uses
Google to search the manual.

* News posts: We should consider what kinds of posts to have: new
releases, new betas, interesting works (i.e. post to new albums,
things like Oeyvind's TedX video), etc.

These are some of the things I thought would be nice. Please post any
suggestions you might have. At the end of this thread, I think we
should add issues for each item to do to the csound.github.io issues
tracker and then proceed to work on them together.

Thanks!
steven

It might be nice if we could also show the most recent posts to the
mailing list too? Would this be possible? It would give people a real
sense of the amount of activity among the Csound user base.

I think it could be useful to point to debian based users (including
ubuntu and derivatives) that the simplest is to just "apt-get install
csound csoundqt". Similarly for RPM based distributions (although they
seem to be outdated).

It seems Nabble has an embeddable widget:

http://n5.nabble.com/help/Answer.jtp?id=36

Perhaps we could use that.

Could you post an issue at
https://github.com/csound/csound.github.io/issues mentioning this
email?

Thanks!

Sounds good! Do you have any other instructions regarding needing to
add unstable or some other repo first?

If you could add an issue to:

https://github.com/csound/csound.github.io/issues

that'd be fantastic.

Thanks!

Hi All,

Just FYI: I reorganized some of the top-links and side-bar links and
pushed those changes. Particularly, I found the Download top-link to
the download.html page was missing. Note, I also reorganized them to
follow how python.org has their 2nd bar (about, download, etc.). I
think the python.org page looks really nice and that it might be a
nice model.

Thanks!
