Subject[Csound-dev] Website template
Hi guys!

We discussed the issue with Rory and Steven, and they suggested to write about it to the list.
We all agreed that the site needs redesign, but, imo, we should not invest our time to web design, and probably the best way would be to buy a template (as we did with the ICSC2015 web site). I found nice template: http://themeforest.net/item/workscout-job-board-html-template/full_screen_preview/13046688 – it has nice and very comfortable to read typesetting, also there are a lot of styled elements we can reuse, like blocks, tables, badges, etc.

So, what do you think about the idea?

Perhaps something of a hybrid, like a stylesheet tool?
The name is hard to beat...

Hey Eugene,

I also thought about the website and to learn Jekyll a bit, I ported the actual Csound page to the following template.

I can upload the result somewhere (if you explain me how), so we can have a look at it if you want. Probably as a fork on Github?

+1 on the Jekyll comments. And I think Eugene is right, it's best to concentrate on content rather than web design.

Hi Alex,

Yes, for such kind of things is better to use forks. Then we can look at your repo.
But I don’t like this template. I think, that the most important things in the template are the font settings and the text layout. SkinnyBones’s text feels very heavy comparing to ones at csstyle.io or workscout.

I’m not proposing to go away from Jekyll. It’s not very hard to adapt a HTML template to it, I’ve done this several times (for example the template for our lab’s site [1] has been ported from Drupal (!)).
I think we’d better focus on a nice template that’d be pleaseful to read. Most Jekyll templates are made for blogs and miss a lot of styling features, like tables, badges, nice blocks, etc. That means that someone from the community would need to implement them manually at some point. That’s why I think it’s more reasonable (and cheaper if we translate time into money) to buy a template and do a little web design. That’s is my point.

Maybe we can just look for templates over the web and create the list to choose from.

Hi Eugene,

yeah, I might have gotten you wrong in the first message. Now I see, we all agree on Jekyll and we just want a nicer design.
You might be right about "Skinny Bones". When I put our Csound content into it, I also wasn't totally convinced of the template and started tweeking here and there. But if we can find a better template, that would be great.

I think this may be a very good solution for us, as it would probably
save us a lot of time to get something good to start.

I looked through the site and found these:

http://themeforest.net/item/retouch-app-html-template/full_screen_preview/11454204

Which I thought might work as well. (I was looking at this on in
particular http://darwinthemes.com/retouch/html/theme/index-cyan.html).
It seems like we could add all of the appropriate information to the
front page to point people to places to go.

I checked the retouch template. It does look better, but I think it’ll be hard to maintain, because I don’t see any signs of CSS framework in the HTML code. I can’t say what framework the WorkScout template uses, but I see common patterns in classes like “container”, “sixteen columns”… Also I like how dropdown menu items behave: they don’t disappear right after you move the mouse away from them — this is very convenient, as one can accidentally move the mouse away from the dropped menu. Also retouch blog posts look ugly when you remove image from them (see figure attached).
