forgot to mention that the issues i was having with the binary release
(4.23f07) were that it was looking for libtcl and libtk and also looking
for symbols that weren't available in glibc.  the tcl/tk think was
simple enough to fix with symbolic links.  the other was a bit of a
showstopper for me as i didn't want to put different versions of glibc
on my computer.  however, compiling with the modified Makefile worked
without a problem.  

i'm on redhat 9.0, pIII-1.2ghz, btw.
