[Csnd-dev] crash in csound_rtio

I am getting a confusing crash with latest develop. The csound binary crashes (even if csound is called without any args) within csoundSetExternalMidiErrorStringCallback in csound_rtio.c void csoundSetExternalMidiErrorStringCallback(CSOUND *csound, const char *(*func)(int32_t)) { csound->midiGlobals->MidiErrorStringCallback = func; } csound->midiGlobals seems to be null, but maybe the problem is that this function is being called at all? If I comment the line "csound->midiGlobals..." out, the crash is gone. best regards, Eduardo |

midiGlobals is allocated in csoundReset(), it looks like something going very wrong for it to be NULL.
Maybe a backtrace may give some clues.

By the way, the ABI has changed - maybe this is the reason? Was the binary recompiled and re-linked?

I see the problem now, csound seems to still look in the default user path for plugins, even if OPCODE7DIR is set. Thanks for the heads-up regarding ABI changes On Sat, Jul 11, 2026 at 6:17 PM Victor Lazzarini <000010b17ddd988e-dmarc-request@listserv.heanet.ie> wrote:

OPCODE7DIR64 do you mean? Are you using floats? Prof. Victor Lazzarini

Looking at the code, I don't see a way to disable csound from looking into the user plugins dir. It can be disabled at the cmake level. A flag to disable this would be great. I can make a PR with that change. On Sun, Jul 12, 2026 at 5:47 PM Eduardo Moguillansky <eduardo.moguillansky@gmail.com> wrote:

This proved to be trickier than I thought, since plugins are loaded before options are processed: setting a flag to modify this behaviour comes too late. A solution would be to split loading of plugins from instance creation (csoundCreate would not load any modules). Plugins need to be loaded for all the cases where a command line flag results in csound showing some information (output devices, system sr, opcodes) and exiting. Doing it the split would be good in the sense that, at the moment, if there is any architecture mismatch (plugins are built with a different ABI than csound), csound just crushes even before being able to do anything like "csound --version" or "csound --help". Any thoughts? On Sun, Jul 12, 2026 at 6:08 PM Victor Lazzarini <000010b17ddd988e-dmarc-request@listserv.heanet.ie> wrote:

csoundCreate() (via csoundReset() ) needs to load all plugins I think so that the compiler can see the opcodes. It may be possible to move it to the first compilation call, but it's a bit doubtful I guess since this may have lots of implications we do
not anticipate.
Being close to 7.0 release, I think the case is weak for attempting this change.
We should deal with this using versioning, which works for instance now to prevent 7.0 loading 6.18 plugins.
The problem you encountered is because everything is beta now and we are not bumping versions on ABI changes. But we should make sure the versioning mechanism works when we move to full release.
