Subject[Csnd-dev] [OT] Mobile phones
Only peripherally related to csound.....

My mobile phone ceased displaying anything so I think it needs to be
replaced, and I thought I might even join th 21st century with a
so-called smart phone (I hate trying to send a text with the multiple
clicks). I seem to remember some earlier messages tat suggested the
csound could run on an android phone; is this so and which version of
android? I did borrow a smart-phone a couple of years ago but android
2 seemed incapable of csound, and actually much at all.

I have two other constraints against each other; I have fairly large
fingers so typing on the 3.5" screen is a challenge, while my
pocket/bag has a maximum length of 14cm (5.5in). Any advice welcome.

I have the impression that any new android phone will run Csound, unless you
are looking into second-hand ones. But Android 5.0, I think, is the current minimum for Mike’s frontend.

Android 5 is currently the minimum. You need a fairly high end phone to get decent performance and a tablet is actually much easier to use, but a phone is doable.

If you are interested in graphics, visual music, or just interactive widgets try to make sure that the browser and screen support WebGL. There are examples in Git.

I have a Motorola Droid 2 Turbo phone that does all that.

Best,
Mike

Android 5 is the minimum if you wish to use Mike's frontend, but android 4 can run Csound without any problems. For what it's worth I just bought a cheap but fairly high powered phone with a large screen. It does fine with Csound and comes with android 5.1, it's a Vodafone Smart Ultra 6. I use it only for development as I find it too large to use as a phone!

Incase it's of any use, I'm running Mike's old frontend on Android
4.4.4 on a Motorola Moto G. I'm not sure how many versions of the
frontend there have been, but I'm fairly certain it's the version
before the recent update.

It works, however it does crash alot more than desirable.

There must be something about the Moto or about your pieces, that
version rarely crashed for me on Samsung S4/Android 4.4.4.

Can you give me more details about the crashes? How much RAM does the
MOTO have? What model is it? What kinds of pieces crash -- any sort of
piece, or certain kinds?

Thanks,
Mike

I've got the 1st gen Moto G, it's apparently got 1GB RAM and 1.2 GHz
quad-core processor.

I haven't noted a specific pattern to it, but I'm fairly sure it's the
more complex operations that crash more, for instance, intense
spectral processing seemed to cause a few crashes. I'll make a note of
specific instances in the future and let you know.

After some further thought, it has occured to me that csound might
crash more on my phone when I have lots of other apps open, as I do
frequently have up to 10 apps running at once. I'll have to check this
out for sure, but it's probably a good bet
