Well, you have to report these, as they can be serious and
can tell us a lot about how the sutff is going to build and
run in different systems.

In the past eight or so months, Csound has been building
fine on OSX, sometimes with minor adjustments, at every
update. The
adjustments I expect to have to do since I am one of two
with developer access building on OSX, and sometimes
changes in one platform do not work out on another. But
Istvan is developing on Linux, so you would not expect
many problems in that platform when updating your
local repository. I am actually surprised at what you are
saying.

Thanks, I'll report to the list the details of the build issues I run
into. These could be as much Fedora 4 issues as CSound. But, the last
one I had was the following (about two weeks ago):
...
scions: *** Source 'interfaces/python_interface.i' not found, needed by
target 'interfaces/python_interface_wrap.cc'. Stop.
...

I figured I'd wait a few days and sync again, since if it was a general
issue (i.e. not just my machine) then it would vaporize. The only thing
changed on my system between that build and the prior build was that cc4
was my compiler rather than gcc3.2. It may also have been a change in
options, and I suspect that many build issues are due to the fact that
there are so many options for scons that it is not realistic to try the
bulk of the permutations before a check-in.

Anyway, if someone wants to give me a series of test scenarios for
builds, I'm more than willing to do them regularly. Just let me know
(i.e. with and without VST, with/without Jack, , w/ gcc3.2 and gcc4, and
so on). For now, I don't know the source well enough to do much more
than testing and debugging, so I want to help in at least some way. I
tried to trouble-shoot this by looking at tree history, but apparently
anonymous access does not allow history viewing? Is it possible to
expose history for those w/o developer access?

And, one last thing - any recommendations for sound card? I finally have
a working sound system, with one gap: the ALSA controls do not allow me
to set the microphone gain high enough. I've been using a pre-amp to
work around the issue. Instead, I'd like to simply ditch the three
different cards I've tried and use one that others have had great
success with. FYI - I've tried SB AWE64, SB Live 24bit, and the on-board
AC97 chipset, all having various problems either in latency, with
pops/clicks, or with deficient level control.

Thanks,

Mike W

I'll in the future report these right away.

I use an MAudio 2496 at home and remain extremely happy with it -- and
we use similar cards on two of the machines at the university. I have
had bad experiences with Hamerfall though. Of course I am not that
interested in latency, so this might be totally irrelevant!

These machines are running Suse 9.x; my colleague has had real problems
with an Audigy2 card on Suse and Ubuntu, but did eventually get it to
work.

Clearly by background is very different; I have found Windows a real
pain to use, and never compose on a Windows machine.
