| I sympathize as I recently went through this process myself. There are several contradictory sets of instructions accessible from the MinGW web site. Here is what worked for me.
1. Install MSys in c:/utah/msys.
2. Install MSys DTK (but NOT MSys DVLRP).
3. Upgrade MSys make, automake, autoconf, libtool. I think I renamed the make from "mingw32-make-3.80.0" (whatever it was originally named) to just "make.exe". This seemed to help when it came to the "./configure;make;make install" routine for GNU packages.
4. Install "current" versions of MinGW components in c:/utah/msys/1.0/mingw (MSys is preconfigured to use this relative path): gcc-core, gcc-g++, gcc-f77, gcc-objc, binutils, mingw-runtime, mingw-utils, win32 api.
5. Install the "insight" debugger in c:/utah/insight. Not the one from Cygnus, but the one at http://prdownloads.sf.net/mingw/insight.exe?download.
6. If you have MSVC installed, set up a script to exclude it and all its components from your PATH so that in the MSys shell you would "source mingw_env.sh" or something like that.
