It would be a good idea -as was discussed- to release first a beta
version for a while befora calling it a stable release.

same documentation, the same number of builds.  We could go to
even/odd numbering like the Linux kernel?

The difference is just the name... But it will avoid confusion and grief
for inexperienced users, as minor wrinkles will be ironed out before an
"official" release.
I think the release can be made on sourceforge, just calling it "beta",
then some days or weeks later, another release with the same version
number without beta. Anyone will avoid the beta and go for the actual
release.
