[Cs-dev] Csound5GUI on OSX

Date2007-05-17 13:21
FromVictor Lazzarini
Subject[Cs-dev] Csound5GUI on OSX
I'd just want to let you know that I have been able to run
Csound5GUI on OSX from yesterday's CVS. Thanks to
Andres for sorting out any issues that were preventing it
to work. David's editor that has been added to it
is also working.

This is intel only at the moment. I am starting to work on the
next release and I am putting together my development system
on an intel Mac (I've got one now, thanks to my HoD). Everything
seems to be going OK. I am just missing portmidi which I will
add later today or tomorrow.

I am hoping to have a basic systems (ie. similar to the PPC distro)
ready tomorrow. Perhaps I can get the help of some intel Mac beta-testers
when I have it ready.

Thanks for trying it out Victor, I'm very glad it's working now!

Are all the configuration dialogs opening properly?

Cheers,

Winsound Launcher working well

Csound5GUI Launcher worked the first time - but no longer - if I set
paths or not (won't run any orchestras)

-+rtmidi=virtual doesn't seem to work (no keyboard appears)

-iadc doesn't seem to work - can't run your FLTK equilizer instrument

partikel is working - the GUI version and the non gui version posted

SubjectRe: [Cs-dev] Csound5GUI on OSX
While we're on the subject... Would it be possible to add some kind of
exception catching to csound5gui when running csound trhough the api?
One nasty thing currently going on, is that if csound crashes it brings
csound5gui down with it (even if it's one of those "harmless" crashes at
the end of performance), which is really annoying.

What would be the mechanism to do this. I know how to do it in C++, but
not in C, any pointers?

Cheers,
Andrés

If you have the time, I think it might be really useful to see a quick
rundown online of what your OSX dev system winds up being! I would like
to make one too, but am still very mac ignorant.

I can beta test if it doesn't require too much mac knowledge. I have the
machine and a soundcard.

Hi Dr. B,

I mean executing csound5gui from a terminal like you do csound. I think
you can drag the csound5gui icon into the terminal and press enter.

Cheers,

Subject[Cs-dev] audio IO on OSX Intel
As I said yesterday, the way to use portaudio IO on
OSX Intel is make up an 'aggregate device' out of
inputs and outputs and then select it as your device
(either with -odacN -iadcN or as your default device).

To do this, open AudioMIDI options (on Utilities) and
select from one of the menus, "open aggregate device editor"
or something like that. Then make up your device. This
will become a new device in your list.

The reason why it will not work otherwise is because
on Intel Macs, devices are either input or output, not
'input and output', as in PPC Macs. Because of this,
Csound tries to open the output device for input and
fails, as Csound on OSX only opens the device ONCE
for both input and output (otherwise things would not
work in PPC Macs). So, in order to keep the compatibility
with PPC, I will not change the code for now. I believe
JackOSX has had the same problem and recommends a
similar solution.

SubjectRe: [Cs-dev] Csound5GUI on OSX
I have done more tests today and:

- Csound5GUI works generally as expected, but I had a 'wheel of death'
(ie. a crash) situation when using the virtual MIDI keyboard, which I will
    have to investigate.
- Virtual keyboard is there alright, as I was able to start it from the
command line and from csound5GUI; Rick, can you try it again,
-+rtmidi=virtual -M0 ?
- iadc/-odac works with aggregate devices

I have added jack to my build, but have not tested it. Now I will tackle
fluidsynth.

Thanks Victor. Did you have to install them from source or were you able

This might be related to threading. Have you tried checking/unchecking
the run in a separate thread checkbox?

from source. I never bothered with finch/darwin ports (it just
seems a crazy idea to me to have all this structure behind ot, when
it's all unix-like software and mostly autotools based).

SubjectRe: [Cs-dev] Csound5GUI on OSX
I had a look at this. If I uncheck 'perform in a separate thread", the
GUI window becomes unresponsive; in fact the whole program can't
be exited.

Then re-starting the program does not bring the GUI up anymore. I think
this is what Dr.B. reported. Deleting the .csound folder in the local directory
resets the options and I can run the GUI again.

So, that option can't be used on OSX.

Meanwhile, the wheel of death comes up when trying to run the MIDI virtual
keyboard. So, my suggestion is: take the MIDI virtual keyboard option off
the list in Csound5GUI and add a manual notice saying it can't be used with
Csound5GUI on OSX. It's all to do with threading issues and FLTK, but
I can't see how it can be fixed.

Mind you, my no-frills Csound 5 GUI for OSX can run the keyboard and
all other FLTK gui stuff without any problems. But then it's not written
using FLTK.
