No, rather the other way round. These are NOT C89 functions, and for a
very long time we used a variety of ANSI C compilers -- SGI, SUN, Symmatec,
Norcroft, MSVC, something else on Atari.... -- and the use of GCC was a
late introduction, and not universal. To a great extent that has
changed but there is still a pretence of supporting C89
