Just FYI, I came across Microsoft's Dreamspark site yesterday:

If you're a student at an academic institution (though, it might work
if you've just got an academic account), it allows you to use a number
of Microsoft's development programs for free. In particular, I was
able to download Windows Server 2012 RC2, install it in a Virtualbox
virtual machine, and am now getting it set up for windows dev (I was
able to compile Csound on it today with mingw, msys, cmake, swig,
etc.). It's a 64-bit OS, so there's opportunities there to explore
compiling for win64.
