Following discussions on (and off) the PortAudio list I now have a
version of rtpa.c that uses an environment variable to select an ALSA
device (like the -D option in aplay).  I have played my mono example.

It is less than nice to change an environment variable to change from
stereo to mono, but it is working.  We could consider a better
interface.
