2. The attraction would be the ability to write Csound instrument 
definitions in Lua, a much more powerful language than the current Csound 
orchestra language.

The problem is that lua is a general purpose language. Csound
instruments are rather specialised and would probably benefit
from a domain specific language.

Dear Michael,

My question was not "why use higher level languages?".  Rather, it is
"what is gained by making higher level languages internal to Csound?".
It has always been possible to define Csound instrument definitions in
whatever language one likes and then make a translation to the orchestra
language.
