following up
          I have already asked a related question....

If I change 
commonEnvironment.Append(CPPFLAGS = '-DHAVE_PTHREAD_BARRIER_INIT')
to
commonEnvironment.Append(CPPFLAGS = ['-DHAVE_PTHREAD_BARRIER_INIT'])

and similar the problem goes away.  It only happens in float formats
and the two forms seem to be in indistriminant use.

I assume some Python programmer can explain and say which is correct
