I have a new Linux machine (actually an old machine with Planet CCRMA at
Home (Fedora Core 1) on it, but not as old as the one I was using before --
where building Csound took two hours!), which builds all of Csound and
CsoundVST in about 10 minutes.

I am pleased to report that on my system, the ALSA audio appears to work
without noise, though I do get some dropouts. And the PortAudio pa_minlat
test program promises that PortAudio will deliver a blistering 3.5
millisecond latency!

However, learned something useful from this and from the PortAudio list.
The first device reported by PortAudio, the one with 16 ins and 16 outs, is
a pseudo OSS driver -- ALSA emulates OSS for backward compatibility. On my
machine, this is dac0, and dac1 is the real ALSA driver. Using dac1, things
work better.

This suggests that perhaps John ffitch has not actually enabled the ALSA
driver on his machine.

Can you explain this? I have been using ALSA on all my Linux machines for
a very long time.
