Hi,

I think that it's not so much how difficult it is to maintain, but
whether someone has the time to do it... What advantages does
self-hosting have over using wordpress hosting?

Cheers,
Andrés

SubjectRe: [Cs-dev] Csound.sf.net - Wordpress
Wordpress hosting would be simpler, but less customizable. Also, we'd
have to have a redirect from csound.sf.net to to something like
csound.wordpress.com. I could probably maintain the site in terms of
making sure things are up to date for plugin versions and wordpress
version. I'd rather like to get someone else involved in maintaining
the content to update linkes for new releases and things like that.
The wordpress admin site makes that quite easy to edit pages, using a
WYSISWYG editor. (We'll have this problem of updating the content if
we were on wordpress hosting or on sf.net)

Thanks

Hi Andres,

Wordpress is pretty easy to maintain; when new versions come out, you
can use the dashboard and just press "upgrade" and it does it for you.
Security wise, shouldn't be too many issues I think as new versions
come out regularly for any critical bugs.  Note: this is just
csound.sf.net, which I don't think is that well ranked a site compared
to csounds.com.  My thought is that we'll have good security until
proven otherwise.  (Note: I've had wordpress on my personal site for
many years without much issues).

Thanks!
steven

SubjectRe: [Cs-dev] Csound.sf.net - Wordpress
I've been thinking about this, and I'm not sure what is the value
offered by having a separate site at csound.sf.net. A good part of the
content is duplicated between csounds.com and csound.sf.net.

There are good reasons for a dev site for csound, but it could be
hosted in csounds.com/develop or something like that. Then,
csound.sf.net could just be a redirect.

SubjectRe: [Cs-dev] Csound.sf.net - Wordpress
Yes, I saw it a week or so ago and that's how I figured out it how to
install Wordpress on sf.net manually. The current csound.sf.net is
using a self-installed version, not the hosted apps. The wiki on
sf.net/projects/csound will need to migrated soon, but I have not seen
instructions on migrating that on their site yet.

SubjectRe: [Cs-dev] Csound.sf.net - Wordpress
This is something to think about too, and should be part of the
discussion. Right now this is targetted as a replacement for the
current csound.sf.net, which has out of date download links and other
things. I can imagine this being a more developer focused site and
one which developers could update easily, while the csounds.com site
being the community site it always has been. I know in the past that
the developer related stuff could sometimes put off some non-technical
users, so I can see value in having a separate site.

On the other hand, if we want to do a redirect, it is very simple (I
use one for blue's sf.net site).
I can also see value in doing everything at csounds.com.

I don't really have a preference, except that the current
csound.sf.net should be updated to newer content. Whether that's to
wordpress on csound.sf.net, or a redirect to csounds.com, doesn't much
matter to me.

SubjectRe: [Cs-dev] Csound.sf.net - Wordpress
Since I haven't heard anything back, I've gone ahead and made the
change. Going to csound.sf.net or csound.sourceforge.net now redirects
to csounds.com.

For Devs: I also cleared out the projectweb/htdocs folder to have just
the index.php that redirects to csounds.com. I did make a backup
before clearing, and it is in projectweb/htdocs.bak.

One other note, for Csounds.com, I think we need to add an image link
to SourceForge so that we are compliant with some requirements of
theirs.

Thanks all for the feedback!
