But didn't we just clean out such SDKs from CVS?

However, I have no objection, in fact I think it's a good idea. Perhaps they can be separate packages so people checking out csound5 itself needn't download them along with everything else.

Mike

I think it would make sense to write a native MIDI plugin for MME
(and possibly other platforms too, since PortMidi is generally the
most difficult to build one of the Csound 5 dependencies, and it
does not seem to be actively maintained).
For PortAudio, I would prefer having a downloadable "PortAudio SDK"
for Windows, including a portaudio.dll.0.0.19 file built with MSVC
supporting all three major interfaces (MME, DirectSound, and ASIO),
and the necessary header files (probably just portaudio.h) and import
libraries for MSVC and MinGW. As PortAudio development does not seem
to be very active, this package would not need to be updated frequently.
SConstruct is already complicated enough without build targets for
external libraries like PortAudio and PortMidi.

I have no objection to having SDKs that include large binaries in CVS,
as long as they are in a separate module, and are not in the sources.

That is exactly what I have thought of.

You could just put them in the Csound web space at Sourceforge or
Csounds.com. Since they are just dependencies that are not part of the
Csound project, that should be acceptable. (It may even be preferable,
since if you put binaries in CVS, I think you will be required by
Sourceforge policies to also include the source code).

Using CVS to fetch large files is frequently a problem for some of us.
Putting them in the web space means they can be zipped up and much easier to
download (with separate packages for each platform and no need to use CVS
once Csound 5 source packages are released).
