| Hey all, I just purchased the new O'Reilly book by Karl Fogel,
"Producing Open Source Software: How to run a successful free software
project." ( Says copyright 2006, um, right guys ... )
IMHO it is worth it's weight in gold and would benefit all of us and the
csound dev and user community if everyone were to read it and think
about some of the issues he brings up. He is one of the developers ( or
has been ) for CVS, Subversion, Emacs, and numerous other projects. The
book superbly handles the technical side and manegerial/interpersonal
side of developing open source.
Some of the topics include:
- licensing
- technical infrastructure: mailing lists, versioning, bug tracking,
using web, wiki, irc effectively
- forkability, types of management heirarchy, project consesus and democracy
- communication among developers
- packaging and releasing
- managing volunteers.
Not that I think the csound dev community is not already doing a good
job, but at $25.00 US, this book is a steal, and as a long time observer
of the csound dev scene, I can say with some certainty that there is
some great stuff in this book and cause for thought for everyone. The
real strong point is his superb coverage of human issues. IMHO we would
all improve our relations and productivity by adopting some of his
policies and practices, and the real world examples are excellent.
Thanks
Iain
