who would be content to make soundfiles, then burn them on CDs or play them
from another machine. What changes to sources would be required?

On my Debian machine i do not have a sound card so it seemed
reasonable to ensure libsndfile was installed and then build csound.
scons filed when it claimed (correctly) that the -lasound library was
missing.
I think a non-realtime system should be allowed. Until then I have
compiled ALSA with a dummy soundcard
