Why don't you just build Csound, it is so much more flexible. Start with just libsndfile (you have
RT audio with alsa), you can add dependencies as you need them. That is what I would do. If
you need help, ask me, as I run Fedora 7 as well.

Subject: [Cs-dev] Installing Csound For Fedora (Linux)

So Im running Fedora 7 -

I hadcsound 5.03.0-13.fc7.i386 installed. The python module was crashing on the second call to performCSD when I ran the following:
import csnd

str = """
<CsoundSynthesizer>

  </CsInstruments>
  <CsScore>
    f1 0 8192 10 1
    i1 0 3
  </CsScore>
</CsoundSynthesizer>
"""

def peformCSD(str):
  f = file("test.csd", 'w')
  f.write(str)
  f.close()

  cs = csnd.Csound()
  cs.Compile("test.csd")
  cs.Perform()

peformCSD(str)
peformCSD(str)

I downloaded what I thought would be the best upgrade (I assume this is version 5.07) :Csound5.07-i386f.tar

I extracted the files and ran the installer. I specified /usr/local/bin and /usr/local/lib for the destinations, etc

I got the following output after it successfully installed

cp: cannot stat `./lib/libcsound.a': No such file or directory
cp: cannot stat `./lib/libasound.so.2': No such file or directory
cp: cannot stat `./lib/libfluidsynth.so.1': No such file or directory

Ok - that's fine -- I wonder what versions of Linux that installer actually works for ... . Anyway, I'm sure I will have questions building.  I guess that's what I will be doing with tomorrow afternoon.

There should be a wiki dedicated to building and/or installing Csound.

thanks

I agree.

I would be very happy to host such a forum/wiki at cSounds.com!

Greg.  I'll email you some of my notes from when I did this with Victor's help a month or so ago.

If you want to keep notes as you go, and then post the process at cSounds.com - that would be really awesome.

SubjectRe: [Cs-dev] Installing Csound For Fedora (Linux)
In fact, it's very easy if use yum, because you don't even need to build most
packages, just get and install them with yum. Then scons and you're done.
The way I do things is that I never 'install' my builds, instead I point
OPCODEDIR,
LD_LIBRARY_PATH, PATH and PYTHONPATH to my top-level build directory and
it's fine.

Linux seems to be the simplest platform to build Csound.

So I grabbed the latest source :

 cvs -z3 -d:pserver:anonymous@csound.cvs.sourceforge.net:/cvsroot/csound co -P csound5

I then run scons.

Regardless of what flags I specify to scons I end up with the same error:

Again - I'm installing on Fedora 7.

Subject: [Cs-dev] Installing Csound For Fedora (Linux)

So Im running Fedora 7 -

I hadcsound 5.03.0-13.fc7.i386 installed. The python module was
crashing on the second call to performCSD when I ran the following:
import csnd

str = """

def peformCSD(str):
  f = file("test.csd", 'w')

  f.close()

  cs = csnd.Csound()
  cs.Compile("test.csd")

peformCSD(str)
peformCSD(str)

I downloaded what I thought would be the best upgrade (I assume this is
version 5.07) :Csound5.07-i386f.tar

I extracted the files and ran the installer. I specified
/usr/local/bin and /usr/local/lib for the destinations, etc

<pastedGraphic.png>

I got the following output after it successfully installed

Even if I run bin/csound it still shows version 5.03.1

Any help here would be appreciated. Even if I get this to work, should
it automatically install the python module in the correct version of
python? (Im now running python 2.5) or do I need to manually update
the site package myself?

SubjectRe: [Cs-dev] Installing Csound For Fedora (Linux)
Greg,

last year Jim Hearon reported the same problem with Fedora core 7. The
trouble is
that I can't reproduce it. I have installed Fedora 7, upgrading from 6,
some weeks ago and have never had any trouble building csound. Just to be
doubly
sure, I did a separate anonymous checkout, just like you, and Csound had
nothing
of the problem you report. Checked to see if gcc was the same version and it
was, with scons-0.97-2.fc7.

My config.log shows a pass (yes) for stdio.h, as expected. I bet if you
copy the
gcc commad-line that failed onto your shell, it will not fail. I think
scons can't find
the compiler. This might be because you have ccache installed (I have seen this
somewhere before). To see if it's the case, try

'which gcc' or 'which g++'

If you get

/usr/lib/ccache/gcc   (etc)

Then ccache is there and you should remove it, because scons can't cope
with it.
In general, I'd say the problem is that scons cannot find gcc, for some reason,
so just check your setup.

Victor

Hi Victor -

Thanks for the tip! I would have never gotten past the first step without that hint.

which gcc did show that ccache was being use.

So I disabled ccache

First, I tried
export CCACHE_DISABLE=1

but that didn't seem to do the trick, so then I tried the brute force approach

As root user
- mv /usr/bin/ccache /usr/bin/ccache_

Bingo!

Then it failed on the sndfile step.  So I ran:
yum install libsndfile-devel

Then it failed compiling when dealing with PortAudio.

I had portaudio 18.1-8.fc6.i386 installed - that obviously wasn't working

I tried yum install portaudio

it was updated to the latest version

so I downloaded the latest tar ball and installed
with
./configure
make
make install

Everything was cruising along until I got to the next error:

scons: *** Source `/usr/local/lib/libsndfile.so' not found, needed by target `_csnd.so'.  Stop.
scons: building terminated because of errors.

[root@localhost csound5]# ls /usr/local/lib
csound        libfluidsynth.so  liblo.so        libportaudio.la  libportaudio.so.2
libsndfile.so
libasound.so  libjack.so        libportaudio.a  libportaudio.so  libportaudio.so.2.0.0  pkgconfig

I'm stumped.  Now what do I do?  The file cant be found?

Sorry for posting all of these problems.  Hopefully they will help someone else one day.

thanks
greg

Greg,

last year Jim Hearon reported the same problem with Fedora core 7. The
trouble is
that I can't reproduce it.

'which gcc' or 'which g++'

If you get

/usr/lib/ccache/gcc   (etc)

Then ccache is there and you should remove it, because scons can't cope
with it.
In general, I'd say the problem is that scons cannot find gcc, for some reason,
so just check your setup.

There should be a wiki dedicated to building and/or installing Csound.Â

Why don't you just build Csound, it is so much more flexible. Start with
just libsndfile (you have

Subject: [Cs-dev] Installing Csound For Fedora (Linux)

So Im running Fedora 7 -

I hadcsound 5.03.0-13.fc7.i386 installed. The python module was
crashing on the second call to performCSD when I ran the following:
import csnd

str = """
<CsoundSynthesizer>
  <CsOptions>
    -odac -d -B4096 -b1024 -+rtaudio=alsa
  </CsOptions>

    endin
  </CsInstruments>
  <CsScore>
    f1 0 8192 10 1
    i1 0 3
  </CsScore>
</CsoundSynthesizer>
"""

def peformCSD(str):
  f = file("test.csd", 'w')
  f.write(str)
  f.close()

  cs = csnd.Csound()
  cs.Compile("test.csd")
  cs.Perform()

peformCSD(str)
peformCSD(str)

I downloaded what I thought would be the best upgrade (I assume this is
version 5.07) :Csound5.07-i386f.tar

I extracted the files and ran the installer. I specified
/usr/local/bin and /usr/local/lib for the destinations, etc

<pastedGraphic.png>

I got the following output after it successfully installed

cp: cannot stat `./lib/libcsound.a': No such file or directory
cp: cannot stat `./lib/libasound.so.2': No such file or directory
cp: cannot stat `./lib/libfluidsynth.so.1': No such file or directory

cp: cannot stat `./lib/libportaudio.so': No such file or directory
cp: cannot stat `./lib/libsndfile.so.1': No such file or directory

Then I went to run csound. This is what I got. Notice:Csound

Subject[Cs-dev] Python Bindings Questions
Hi -

I have a few questions regarding the python interface.

1 - Can I / How do I capture the console messages from the csound
instance?

2 - Just curious why the compile function needs to be called before
you can grab the opcode list.

3 - Is there a good document that covers the python interface that I
can reference? I can look at csnd.py but its not always clear due to
the swig formatting.

thanks
greg

It seems odd to me that a "yum install libsndfile-devel" would place
the library other than in /usr/lib/libsndfile.so and not in
/usr/local/lib/
  I woudl be tempted to check files like custom.py and SConstruct to
see is there is a reference to /usr/local/lib and I woudl check where
libsndfile is
