Yes, as I said before, I tried building with SConstruct and it failed in the 
same way. I am going to try it again right now, as thoroughly as I can. It 
doesn't make sense.

With the risk of being considered an idiot or at least a pain in the
butt, have you considered moving to CMake? http://cmake.org

I notice that most of the messages on this list (since I joined) is
about problems in the build system.. I recently moved from autotools to
CMake and am very happy about it.
