I will upload the Windows installers after I have selected which configuration (float or double) I will support. This will take some performance timing and ABX listening tests. I am writing one orchestra to do both tests, I should be able to do this today or tomorrow. I will continue to maintain our ability to build both configurations on Windows, but I will not package and release both configurations. Michael, I have downloaded and tested your installer on an Windows XP Laptop here. I am happy to see that it is much simpler to do and that, once installed, I was able to launch QuteCsound and run one of the examples from the examples menu - and render a file. WOW.. What an improvement. This is a huge step forward for Windows Users. Thanks so much for all your work on this. I would like to make some suggestions and a request. Particularly regarding the beginner and first time user experience (which I think we need to keep in focus with our "installers") - I would like Windows-based developers and teachers on the developers list to weigh in as well. It would be incredible if we could make sure that the Windows Installer featured the same collection of basic items at the Mac Installer (and that both strove to make things as simple as possible to install a get up and running. Customization and alternative versions should be available and supported, but should be more for advanced beginners and supported on our personal websites, cSounds.com, and other : Speaking as a beginner now, I want to check out and install "Csound" So... Please Michael - you are so close.... I would like to request that just as Victor is now doing on the Mac (and as he can confirm what he is installing) 1. Do a full install and don't ask me too many questions about choices. - in the install process, you ask if I want to install utilities? (the beginner asks - what's this?) - in the install process, you ask me to check if I want to install frontEnds? (wthe beginner asks - what are these? do I need them? I want Csound) (in the mac world, if you want to install extras or install less, there is usually a custom button for that - you sort of have this but...) 2. You say this is a big download (and it is not - not really - maybe with less frontEnds it might not be so big?) - in fact, I would like you to add more examples (as I sent to you and as I will outline below) - In the Mac Install, Victor now includes 3 compositions - trapped, xanadu, and homage - In the Mac Install, Victor now includes a huge "Examples" folder of: -- the items I prepared and tested for the OLPC system (including MANY MIDI models, Cool Instruments and COMPOSITIONS!) -- selections from The Csound Catalog (v2 and the upcoming v3) (Including some of my favorite UDO and DSP models) -- my TOOTS (and the .pdf) -- my Csound Book Chapter 1 (and the .pdf) -- Of course - you should add your tutorial to this collection (in the tutorials folder) -- Of course - you should add some of your compositions (in the compositions folder) ++ Victor should add YOUR extra examples, tutorials and music to the Mac Installer! Michael - I shared the link with you a week ago.... and I asked you to include these... they all work with QuteCsound - and they are meant to both answer questions and inspire - and they do!] (No longer will experts like Jim Aikin email us about how to do this or that - these examples contain the answers to most of his questions - and those of all my students.) (This extra stuff might be too much for Michael's website, but it is not too much for SourceForge and it will make a huge difference with getting people started.) For all the developers, here is the link to the examples directory files now included by Victor in the MacInstaller and that I think should be included in all the basic installers. In the examples folder, Victor calls this folder - a little something from Dr. B. - check it out: (Michael - you could add a folder to the examples folder - A little Something from Michael Gogins) 3. You install all the frontEnds - they are confusing and many have not been supported for a long long time. - why would a beginner want to try ALL these front-ends (especially since NONE of them come with any .csds!)- 4. Victor just provides the ONE frontEnd that is being maintained and developed currently - QuteCsound - examples are there in the app - it's cross platform - the manual is linked (we don't need to ditch the others, but we don't need them ALL to show up in the folder and confuse beginners) 5. There is a need for a README file - to explain a few issues - like how to get MIDI to work - Victor now includes a simple file that tells you what's in the folder and how to use the Configure Tab in QuteCsound to set up your MIDI controllers - here is what VICTOR says in the readme: To start, install csound5 by double clicking on its icon. Then drag QuteCsound into your applications folder. Finally, you will be able to check out some of the examples in the examples folder. You will find lots of goodies there. A few quick notes: 1. Qutecsound also has an examples menu showing some of its features 2. To use realtime MIDI from Qutecsound - need to select your midi device from the Configure Icon in the app and set it in the realtime play section of the Configure Dialog. 3. To use MIDI with QuteCsound and a Commercial Sequencer (such as Logic Pro) - need to turn on apple's IAC and create a bus or use MIDIpipe and then adjust setting in the Configure Dialog It would be great if you would add these items, simply the launcher further (go with doubles by the way) and see what the feedback is from Students, User, and Others.... Then - over the next few months - we can refine the collection and the presentation - and possibly have a Launcher for EXPERTS/DEVELOPERS - with a LADSPA, Python, JAVA and API focus? Respectfully submitted to all developers. Richard Boulanger Dr. Richard Boulanger - rboulanger@berklee.edu On Sep 27, 2009, at 2:56 PM, Michael Gogins wrote:

I uploaded the new http://csound.sourceforge.net index.html and faq.html I've been working on. There are only a few issues I wasn't able to resolve: - The Windows, OpenSUSE, and Mac OS X download sections need updated links to 5.11 installers (I'm not sure which installer goes with each link) - The Csound Wiki link is dead (maybe it moved?) Other than that it should be good to go but proof-reading and link-checking would be appreciated. Also, if anybody has access to old browsers I'd appreciate it if they could be used to test it, too, especially the old Internet Explorer browsers. Well done, Andy! Really snazzy and without confusing info! A request: link to the sources in addition to Linux/Mac/Windows links. Are we ready to announce the release? Victor On 29 Sep 2009, at 17:23, Andy Fillebrown wrote:

I went through the frontends page at csounds.com and will use some of them for a "Csound GUIs" section down the left-hand side, under "Links". I'll upload it in a few minutes after I fix the Python info. If there are more frontends or GUIs that should be added, please let me know. ~ andy.f ----- Original Message ----- From: "Dr. Richard Boulanger" <rboulanger56@gmail.com> To: "Developer discussions" <csound-devel@lists.sourceforge.net> Sent: Tuesday, September 29, 2009 1:07:17 PM (GMT-0500) America/New_York Subject: Re: [Cs-dev] csound.sf.net page If you want, I can host some of the other frontends at csounds.com and we can link to them there. I thought it was high time I tried this out, with the latest release (5.11 floats, OS X 10.5 intel): It all looks very nice so far, but when I render to a soundfile, it appends lots of spurious stuff to the name (looks a bit like parts of a file diaog filter string), so a file to be called test.wav becomes: test.wav.wav;*.wavex (unknown) And of course only OSX is daft enough to allow the star character (etc) as part of a filename. Ostensibly this is a bug; unless there is some non-obvious thing I am doing wrong. ?? Richard Dobson ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Come build with us! Not sure, how does this happen? If I add -omyfile.aif to csoptions, I get myfile.aif when I 'render to file'. Victor Lazzarini wrote: > Not sure, how does this happen? If I add -omyfile.aif to csoptions, I > get myfile.aif > when I 'render to file'. > I can't believe it is really recommended to set an output file name by changing CsOptions each time! When I click on Render (to file) I get a file dialog "Output Filename". The file type filter dropdown only has one entry,"WAVE(wavex) Files (*.wav; *.wavex)". On investigating further, I see in the Configuration dalog (via "Preferences"), that the anomalous output filename is written into that. Fine to preserve the outfile name between runs, but it seems odd to me to have a entry box for it in a Config panel. In this dialog "Use QuteCsound options is checked, also "Ask for filename every time". This dialog also offers a File type dropdown, where I have "WAVE (wavex)" selected. All of which means that the file name and format settings are variable/settable (and somehow interact) from two places. If "Configuration" is the primary centre of control, the file name selected there should really appear as the default choice in the Render dialog; so that when you save a file, your default choices are visible automatically, but changeable (without having to modify the csd). And really the full set of file format option s needs to be selectable in the File Save dialog; as it happens I mostly use Csound for generating test files for this and that (rather than composition), and outputting to different file (and sample) formats is one of the things I do a lot! Maybe I am simply not that used to GUIs, but QuteCsound is not yet converting me from running csound from the command line. Hi, This is clearly a bug, and it has been fixed, thanks. I hadn't spotted it since I don't use wavex... A lot more eyes on QuteCsound now... Cheers, Andres On Wed, Sep 30, 2009 at 2:11 PM, Richard Dobson |

Hi, QuteCsound gives you the option of either setting the output file in CsOptions or setting it in the configuration dialog. The configuration dialog doesn't load any info from particular csds as I feel this is kind of strange. It would feel odd if opening a file changes your settings without at least letting you know. So my solution has been to offer an ask everytime checkbox, which of course... asks every time. I've just improved this, by making the dialog auto select the previous file if the outputFile checkbox is checked. If it's not, it will go to the previously used directory. Its true that its somewhat awkward to be able to specify options in two separate places, but I got there because some people prefer using the configuration menu, while others prefer to have their options on the csd file itself, so I wanted to provide both possibilities. It can of course cause trouble if you are using both, but that's what the "Use QuteCsound Options" and "Ignore CsOptions" checkbox are for. I've left both options enabled by default, as I think it will prevent beginners from having troubles. Thanks for your comments. Cheers, Andres On Wed, Sep 30, 2009 at 3:42 PM, Richard Dobson |

While you are at i, Andres, could you check why SFDIR does not seem to be used? If I set in the configuration dialog and then add a '-o whatever' the whatever still ends up in the QuteCsound directory (ie Applications). Btw, I'm using qutecsound in my Monday class to give the students the 'wow' factor with all the scope and other gadgets (then I will go back to the command-line... ;). The examples you supply are good. I particularly like the Phase Mod synth, it's very nice (well I am a fan of all things FM). Thanks for this nice piece of software. Hi, Forgot to mention but that's fixed too. I was adding these to the script for run in term, so they would have no effect when using the API. Now I'm passing them usinf the --env flag, and they are working.
