Cheers for all your help guys. :)

Cannot find libcsound source code though on sourceforge. How 
interconnected is the API and csound? I know csoundCreate creates an 
instance of csound, but if I remove csound itself, the API still 
works... and that is interesting.

Ah, I see, csound.h is packaged in the same tar.gz as the actual program 
csound. This confused me a little because debian has separate packages 
for libcsound64 and csound itself. Would like to know how they've been 
separated.

On debian I can autoremove the package csound  and still compile and run 
my program using libcsound64.

The 'actual program' is just  a series of calls to the API. I think  
it's common for Linux packages to separate libraries and applications.
