There were lines in .cshrc defining OPCODEDIR which I had overwritten.
Calling gdb seems to have created a new shell (a bug I think) and so
overwrote the correct environment with a duff one.
  No idea who wrote the lines in .cshrc -- probably a test installer
ages ago.
