For the record, you should have started on this ages ago. Frankly, as a
relative newcomer to both Python and "standard" makefiles, I look forward to
mucking around with something pythonesque a great deal more. Python is cross
platform, easy to install, well documented, easy to learn, and so easy to
debug ( you don't even have to know python to debug python! ).  The same can
not be said for makefiles unfortunately.

I don't see how complaining about this now does any good. If you'd been
following the dev list you would know that attempts with other build systems
went on for a loooong time.
