The character problem might be just because I have typed in
the source code in Windows.  I'm sure there is an
application that
corrects this but I can't think of one at the moment.

Now that Istvan has more or less finished the API, as he
said,
I will update the text.  I'll try to do it when I'm back
from the ICMC
(anyone going? it would be nice to meet  you!)
