Why do the 5 not switch to X?

I don't know. I looked at the CoreAudio docs and really couldn't even find
an example of how to output sound in real-time. Someone else will have to
answer this.

My current list of known users only includes four people other than myself.

Well, ...

One user's machine is too old.
One user relies on a free version of ProTools and hasn't found a cheap OS X
alternative, yet.
Another user is waiting for an OS X port of MetaSynth to be finished.
The fourth uses both OS 9 and OS X.

Me? It's a _very_ long story, but I'll try to condense it: I find MacOS
X's user interface unacceptable -- in my opinion, it represents major
backsliding in this area compared to OS 9. In addition, while the first
releases of OS X "supported" my computer, their actual support for my
machine's hardware was pretty awful. The most recent release of OS X no
longer lists my Mac model as supported. I also have a laptop which will
never run OS X.
