I was thinking that the csound sndinfo untility might be extended to
incorporate more of the information that Erik's sndfile-info gives?  I
think we need to preserve the layout of the current output but
possibly add options to see extra information, like copyright/author
info etc etc.  What do developers/users think?

yes... more info is good.

and, why does loscil (in macCsound) now play the csound book samples  
at the wrong pitch.

Matt and others... Try etude 1 from chapter 1 with my sing.aif file.   
i ask it to play at 440Hz... it always played in tune with the other
etude 1 instruments, but now....

Is this a MacCsound problem - or a loscil problem?  or a Csound5  
problem?
