Hi Art,

Thank you for this to my attention.  I'll update the FAQ to list the correct Python versions for Windows and Linux.  The answer for Macs seems a bit complicated, though, and I know nothing about Macs so I am not sure what the correct response should be.  Whatever the answer is, to remain consistent with the rest of the page it should cover Csound versions 5.08 through 5.11 since those are the four still available from the page that lists them.  Can someone more knowledgeable provide a more complete answer to that particular FAQ item?

Hehe, thanks anyway Rory =)

The http://csound.sourceforge.net/ page should be good to go except for when the Windows installer is packaged I'll link the release version instead of the beta.

One thing that is a glaring omission in my mind, though, is the complete lack of any "use-cases", (i.e. any actual recordings of pieces) on the site.  To remedy this, over the next few weeks/months/eons I'll be going back through some of the cool stuff I bookmarked and adding them to a separate "Videos and Recordings" page (if nobody minds).  There's been some really cool stuff that I've seen and heard since beginning my latest Csound adventure a year and a half ago, and if I had heard some of it 5 years ago (when my first Csound adventure crashed and burned), then I would have been hooked right there and then rather than it taking a second try 4 years later.  Either way, I'm on Csound hook, line, and sinker, now (slippery worm as it may have been =)

...and thanks for sayin' y'all like the new sourceforge page -- 'twas the least I could do in return after seeing how much work the devs put into it all.  So thanks to you, too!

Here's to the new release ...Cheers!

It's been brought to my attention that the Linux download link is probably not the right one.  I took the Linux package's download link directly from Csounds.com and didn't realize it was the 64 bit platform.  Since Linux users are generally computer savvy and will know to use their package manager to install Csound, what I'd like to do is provide a Linux link that will work for Ubuntu users that may be new to Linux and unfamiliar with Sourceforge's other pages.  Maybe this is the wrong question to be asking, but which version of the Csound packages will run on an x86 32-bit computer running Ubuntu?  ...or is there a better way to get Csound up and running on Ubuntu?

The colors will take a while to fix, unfortunately, and it may be easier to send Adam a new monitor, instead (just kidding =)
Adam, if you can, please send me a link to another web-site that has a decent color scheme that you can see on your monitor so that I only have to update the colors once (it is time a consuming process).

As far as putting recordings up ...I'm sorry, but I'm going to have to get back to that when I have more time.  For now I've posted a link on the left to the .zip file Dr.B has informed me of.

Hi Adam,

Please try the new color scheme and let me know if it's ok.  It should be a brownish-red now instead of black (you may have to refresh your browser if the black one was cached).

Thanks,

Nice work by Andy and everyone.

For me, the page is simply too dark.  I have to select
all to see the headings.  This may be my poor monitor
and setup here.

A big job and nice work by all.

Adam.

That's fine too but now the banner looks out of place! Do remember

I liked the old one better, as the new one has lacks the definition
that gave the gave the darker one a more professional vibe. Perhaps
you can use still use the dark one, and kick up the contrast a bit, by
brightening the text. Or even negate the colors of the dark scheme.

Best,

Thanks for the input everybody.  Once the color scheme is set I can trim out the graphics again to make it look better, but that's the time consuming part of the process, so for now I'm just tweaking CSS settings.

I've just now uploaded a new one taking all the recent notes into consideration.  It should be mostly silver and grey with black text and navy links.  Let me know if it looks ok and I'll proceed.

Yes, can read all the text now, against the brick-red background.
I could vaguely see headings but no text before.

I'm easily pleased, so do feel free to further tinker or adjust for
consensus or best appearance.   Just that that 1st contrast was
too low for comfort.

Beaut.  Thanks.

I think this new page is a big improvement over the old one.

I don't like the color scheme, but that's a nitpick, a matter of
personal taste. It is certainly quite readable.

Thanks!

I'm changing it pretty rapidly so we're getting a bit of cross-talk, but I'm feeling good about the silver and grey one, too.  I'll start trimming out the graphics and hopefully will have a "finished" version sometime this evening (assuming Dr.B doesn't have any more suggestions =)

Ok, I just finished another round of edits ...take a look and let me know if there are any more changes that need to be made.

I relinked the linux download to the one for 32 bit platforms (instead of the rarer 64 bit platforms), and for now I'm going to assume
Ubuntu and Debian users know how to use their respective pacakage managers to find Csound if that link doesn't work for them.

Cheers,

Ubuntu picks up the package from debian automagically, so as long as I
provide the debian package in a timely manner, ubuntu users should too.

OTOH, 5.11 is not building for me right now so users will likely have to
wait...

Thanks for the work. I think the page has certainly improved. I wanted
to ask about the maintanability of the page. Is it easy for anyone to
edit without risking breaking something?

Hi Andy -

I'm also totally happy about the new site. Thanks!

I'd just suggest that you mention Andrés in the "Thanks" section, as
the maintainer of the manual and the creator of QuteCsound. Both is so
much work and so important.

For the first time in my life yesterday someone remarked that Csound
has gotten more user friendly! He was referring to the massive work
being done with the installers, the development of numerous frontends
and the maintaining of the sourceforge page, kudos to all involved!

Hi joachim,

Thanks for the feedback on the new site ...and of course Andres should be thanked, too. Good suggestion!

This.

I, too, appreciate all the wonderful work people have been putting
into improving Csound on the front-end of things. That includes
QuteCsound, the improved installers, new opcodes, the new look at
source forge, the Csound mp3 pack, etc... Even the small things make
a difference, like correcting small errors in the manual. All of
these things add up. And people notice. Now let's see how far we can
take it.

I'm personally starting back up The Csound Blog, and will make sure to
post tips and tricks aimed to those new to Csound:

http://csound.noisepages.com/

Thanks again. You are all doing wonderful work.

Best,
Jake

A few thoughts on "how far we can take it"...
- Put pics and bios of the devs up on a separate "meet the community" page?
- Contact Sourceforge about doing a "Project of the Month" feature on Csound?
- Start a Csound fan site on Facebook (maybe too cheesy)?

... anyway, that's what I would do if I wanted to keep Csound on pace with the 'net and attract more users.

SubjectRe: [Cs-dev] csound.sf.net page
I like all these ideas. There is the Csound Interest Group at Facebook:

http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=22800305072&ref=search&sid=571675923.17754318..1

I find facebook groups tend to be stale, as they generally get little
to no activity. I did start a Csound group at noisepages, a
meta-community for all things art and code, with an strong emphasis on
music.

http://noisepages.com/groups/csound

Noisepages has only recently launched its new social networking/public
blogging features. There is no way to guarantee that it'll take off.
Though it is run by Peter Kirn of CreateDigitalMusic and
CreateDigitalMotion, both of which get a sizable traffic. So the odds
are favorable. If noisepages is successful, then I believe having a
Csound presence there would help, as it gives us a chance to bridge
the gap between our world other others.

I originally misread your 'Project of the Month' suggestion, as I
thought you were saying that perhaps there could be a monthly
topic/challenge that the Csound community sponsors each month, much
like the Sine Composition Challenge from a few months back.
Variations of this idea has popped up several times over the years.
Perhaps now would be a good time to move forward with that. Just pick
a topic, and run with it.

Best,
Jake

I'm actually taking a step back from Csound so I can spend more time on AudioCarver, but I was under the impression that those pages were not user-definable anyway.  Is this not the case?

(in mean http://sourceforge.net/projects/csound/ and http://sourceforge.net/projects/qutecsound/)
Anthony recently made some good suggestions for it.
