John ffitch released Csound 4.23f12 in the csound package on SourceForge this weekend, and I released a distribution based on the same set of sources augmented with a GNU Build System in the csoundgbs package. The GBS version of Csound is known to build on Fedora core 2 and Cygwin on Windows 2000. It should build on other Unix-like platforms including OS X. If FLTK is installed, the GBS version of Csound will build graphics enabled applications including a simple Csound GUI. The RPM was build without FLTK installed, so you must use the sources if you want graphics. John |

When testing the recent GBS release on Cygwin on Win2K, my personal firewall went wild. Only while building, some application requests Domain Name Service. The DNS request appears to occur when each source file is compiled, and sometimes at other points during the build. The weird part is the firewall cannot identify application making the request. There is no file name in the firewall's record of the request, and program's name is reported as Object: ADDR, where ADDR is an eight digit hexadecimal between 80000000 and 80050000. The firewall recorded more than two hundred entries of this form. Since I normally run Windows unplugged, nothing bad happened. I found by engaging the firewall's internet lock, all requests are blocked without user intervention. If you have a similar problem, please tell me about it. I think it is time for me to contact Cygnus. The distribution I built and placed on SourceForge was constructed on Fedora Core 2, so I'm sure it contains no malware from Cygwin. John |
