[Cs-dev] Licensing issues

Subject[Cs-dev] Licensing issues
Hi there. As you may have noticed from a message I recently posted here, I
am packaging the new csound5 for Debian. However, I've run into a couple of
licensing issues: some files are still under the old restrictive
educational and research only license. The files are:

Opcodes/grain4.h
Opcodes/grain4.c
Opcodes/scansyn.c
Opcodes/scansyn.h
Opcodes/scansynx.c

The first two seem to be a mistake, since they are licensed also under the
LGPL (ie, both licenses are quoted at the start of the file). The latter 3
seem to not be a mistake, unfortunately.

For csound to be distributed by Debian, these files must be deleted from the
source package. I have already done that for scansyn*, but I wanted to know
if grain4.* are actually a mistake or not, since obviously I'd like to
reduce as little functionality as possible.

So, the question reduces to: what is exactly the license of
Opcodes/grain4.*?

A side question is: can the license be changed to LGPL, as the rest of the
code was?

Please forgive me if this has already been discussed, but google doesn't
seem to be able to find this, and I can't see the mail archives of the list
(sf.net throws me an internal error). If this has been discussed
previously, any pointers to where are appreciated.

SubjectRe: [Cs-dev] Licensing issues
The problem with grain4 is that I have been totally unable to contact
Allan Lee. When we changed licence I mailed everyone, and there were
a couple of non-responses. In the case on grain4 I left Allan's
original copyright there. The code I wrote in there is licensed as
LGPL or the general licence I gave to all my Csound code way back in
the early 1990s, which is tantamount to public domain.
If anyone has any idea how to contact Allan Lee I would be
delighted. Anyone from Queen's Belfast have any information?

Sorry, I do not have any idea how to contact Allan Lee.

I am interested in contacting the following former MacOS Csound
contributors, myself. If anyone could help me by providing an email or
snail mail address, I would appreciate it.

Dave Madole
Mike Berry
Dan Ellis
Philip Aker
Javier Ruiz
Jeff Bellsey (wrote Spliner)
John R. Burkhardt (wrote Envelope)

Also, who is the "EAD for MAudE" listed in the MacOS front end credits?

Not exactly Csound-related:

Isidoro Perez (MacMusic II)
Graeme Gerrard (Music4C for Mac)

Thanks!

Anthony

SubjectRe: [Cs-dev] Contacting Csound contributors
I have heard back from Dave Madole, Dan Ellis, and Bill Gardner so far. All
of them have agreed that their contributions to the MacOS front end (plus
MIDI to Csound and Mr. Tweaky) can be considered either public domain or
licensed under an open source license of the community's choice.

I sent an email to Mike Berry using an address found on
but I am not sure that that
address is current.

Finally, I think that "EAD" is "Eric Dahl" (or maybe "Erik"?). I found an
Erik Dahl on who attended the College of
Wooster and studied computer music at Brooklyn College. Does anyone know if
this is the same person who contributed to MacOS Csound ??

Thanks.

Anthony
