Of course, with any ksmps value other than 1, table would not work
correctly in its current (and also version 4.xx) state if it allowed
a combination of audio rate output and control rate index. Nevertheless,
the only behavior that would make sense for a control rate index is
basically the same as doing a simple control rate table read and
converting the result to a-rate - which is exactly what the above
assignment does.
