Thank you for the suggestion.  Unfortunately my problem is not this.   
I cn write to the remote disk, but cannot get a lock which movemail  
wants to ensure against losing mail.  At least I think it is a lock.   
I think it hangs on
	  status = flock (indesc, LOCK_EX);
---just confirmed that via strace.  oh well....
