I upgraded from fc3 to fc4, then fc4 to fc5, but each time burned cd's
or a dvd and used the installer to do an upgrade.

I have not tried it myself so do not know how well it works.  My
laptop has been working fine with fc5, though there have been issues
(suspend and hibernation crash).  I haven't bothered to finally fix
them and I think when fc6 comes out, I will do a wipe and clean
install to see if it will "just work" out of the box.
