In what way is the rtalsa driver "broken" ? I am using it regularly, and so do
many other people. If it does indeed have a bug, then it could be fixed if you
provided any useful information on what the error was. You are also not limited
to using rtalsa, and it is not even the default option.

While it is true that you cannot read real time MIDI events from any arbitrary
file in /dev now, it is both not a commonly used feature (you may be the first
one requesting it on the list), and can be relatively easily worked around until
this type of MIDI usage becomes directly supported.
