Istvan- Thanks for all of your suggestions. The next free moment at the computer I will try the various packages, as I am eager to see Csound5 working for me. I will also post any error messages I get when trying to use it--I haven't until now because at least in one of the 2 cases there wasn't any--the rtalsa driver just seemed to close without a message other than the usual "x bytes sent dac" that csound gives at the end of a performance. But if it helps you to see the screen, I will post that when I have another issue. Also, I appreciate your willingness to consider arbitrary MIDI streams from user-selected /dev devices in the next release... As for compiling, when a compile doesn't work for me, I think of it as an itch that needs scratching; I get curious as to why it doesn't work for me, even if the easier solution would be to get a pre-compiled binary package.
