I tried looking online as to what the benefit of gstabs is and the only thing I saw was that it could produce smaller binary output than -g with some version of gcc 3.x (or something along those lines). I'm assuming that anyone using the SConstruct file with gcc is using gdb for debugging and it looks to me that using just -g would work fine for that if not better. John, does the program compile for you if using just -g? If so, my vote is to just get rid of it.
