I am subscribed to one for pure-data and it is quite handy to see what is being worked on. Or sourceforge has syncmail: http://sourceforge.net/docman/display_doc.php?docid=768&group_id=1#syncmail for instance. That way at least everybody registered as a developer on the project gets notification of all commits.
