Richard, I think in terms of using apt-get install maybe my issue stems from using an older OS, I am using stretch. I have done the apt-get update and upgrade commands. Then I use apt-get-install csound and I am back to the same old version as before. Then I looked at the available versions of csound on apt-get and got the following response. root@raspberrypi:/# apt-cache madison csound csound | 1:6.08.0~dfsg-1 | http://raspbian.raspberrypi.org/raspbian stretch/main armhf Packages csound | 1:6.08.0~dfsg-1 | http://raspbian.raspberrypi.org/raspbian stretch/main Sources Does that seem right....ugh...dont want to install newest debian...does anyone know if I can build newest Csound on stretch or do I have to be running buster? It's not difficult at all if you have the build essentials installed and the basic dependencies (libsndfile-dev, and libasound-dev for RT audio).
Have a look at the Debian instructions
since you are using stretch
