Sorry fpr the floundering (and repeated posts).  I'm just not
familiar with cmake's peculiarities,  I just realized thqt re-running
cmake in the same build directory *doesn't* wipe away previous
decisions!  Starting with a fresh directory I see that the error
*is* now different -- it is failing at the link stage.  I'll investigate
that tomorrow.
